tim story

Tim’s been directing since the age of 12, shooting silent films with an 8mm camera inherited from his older brother. Droves of music videos followed post film school, and his smash hit film, Barbershop, lead to a prolific feature career: Fantastic Four, Think Like a Man, Ride Along 1, 2, & 3 and the upcoming Tom and Jerry for Warner Brothers. His seven feature films have grossed over 1 billion dollars, and six of those films have debuted number 1 at the box office. Boom.

Dax is known for his comedic chops as an actor, writer and director…but truth be told, he’s a serious genius of sorts, graduating Magna Cum Laude from UCLA with a degree in Anthropology. Naturally that lead to his first leading role in MTV’s Punk’d and a slew of other non-genius roles in: Without a Paddle, Idiocracy, Employee of the Month, Baby Mama, The Judge, Chips and six seasons of NBC’s Parenthood. In 2018, Dax returned to his love of academia with his podcast, Armchair Expert, the most popular new podcast on iTunes.

brad silberling

Brad’s directed just about everything from award winning features, An Ordinary Man and Moonlight Mile, to critically acclaimed TV, Jane the Virgin and Dash and Lily, to the incredibly innovative and visually stunning, Lemony Snickett’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, which in our humble opinion is one of the best films of the past 25 years. If you don’t share that opinion, you should check it out again.

giovanni messner

Gio grew up in Minnesota where he learned to skateboard, make snowmen, and listen to people complain about the cold. He traded his snow shovel for a surfboard and now he makes commercials. He’s made sad ones, funny ones, spots that make you hungry or happy or make you want to hug the people you love. Mostly, he just wants to make something that reminds us we’re all beautifully human. His work has been honored at Cannes, Clios, and The One Show, and he's been recognized both as a director and as an editor at the AICP and AICP Post awards, but his kids are more impressed by his skill at building things out of amazon boxes.

lawrence sher

Larry is an Oscar Nominated Cinematographer and Director who’s shot over 30 feature films, a handful of which are fantastic (Joker, Kissing Jessica Stein, Garden State) and another handful that are not his fault (Dukes of Hazard, The Dictator, Hangover 3). Either way, they all looked fantastic and made lots of money for other people, with combined Worldwide Box Office grosses of over 4 billion dollars. In 2018, Larry made his directorial debut for Warner Brothers with the comedy, Father Figures, starring Ed Helms, Owen Wilson, Glenn Close, JK Simmons, and Christopher Walken. Mr. Sher is the ultimate filmmaker, an incredible photographer, and an all around decent fella, with a wife and 3 kids living in Los Angeles.

taraji p. henson

Taraji is it. As an actor, director, writer or producer she’s been nominated for an Academy Award, three Emmys, a Critic’s Choice Award, three BET Awards, has won a Golden Globe and is a NY Times Bestselling Author. But all that aside, she’s most proud of being a single mom and advancing mental health issues in the black community, with the foundation named in honor of her father: The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation. Taraji is now turning her sights to directing and will shoot her first feature the comedy Two-Faced for Bron Studios.

Retrofit Films formed in the early 2000s in a garage when the founders were too young to know what they were getting themselves into. In our early ‘scrappy’ days, we served as the concept creator, executor, and often distributor for our content. We’ve carried these same values and early practices across the trends of the past decade. Now proudly the longest lasting digital production company in Los Angeles, Retrofit still serves as a definitive turn-key solution for our forward-thinking clients and partners.

ted melfi

Ted Melfi uses his birth name, Theodore, to make people think he’s more sophisticated than he is. But in all reality, Melfi is a blue collar filmmaker. His work as a writer / director / producer includes the Golden Globe, Oscar, BAFTA, Critics Choice and SAG nominated films Hidden Figures and St. Vincent. As a writer / producer his credits include, The Starling, Going in Style, El Camino Christmas, American Dreamer and Corner Office. In the commercial space, Melfi has crafted spots for Toyota, Intel, Domino’s, Subaru, McDonald’s and FedEx, to name a few. He recently won the AICP Award for Best Short Form Film for his Apple film (shot on iPhone), Daughter.

As ‘digital natives’, we love to build from scratch, reinvent the wheel, and improve on antiquated models to bring life to our work.

The convergence we predicted so many years ago has come to fruition and the delineation between ‘digital’ and ‘traditional’ is all but gone. The engagement is not only real but in real-time. The flux is persistent and every day brings a new challenge. But that is exactly what has us here, every day, excited to take it on.

The revolution is far from over, and whether it’s a major broadcast commercial, feature-length film or series, branded or short-form content, we continue to evolve, to push the envelope, to Retrofit.
